Words She Just Can’t Recognize
Worked all night at the
Summer Conference Center. My mom called
me early this morning. When she found
out my reasons for coming back she said she would take off after 11am and come
and get me earlier. That was very cool
on her part.
I slept from 7:30am to
11:30am. My mom drove me back to
Lockport and we had a nice talk. It was
not a go through the motions talk, which I sometimes force myself to have with
relatives. She was really curious about
the Intro to Political Philosophy course and wanted to know more about Frisch
and Sorrenson.
She said the professors’
names differently each time she asked about them, but that’s my mom. Names of people in my life, who aren’t from
the old neighborhood are unrecognizable to her.
It’s part of her charm. My mom is
a sweet person, and very smart. She
knows more about managing money than I ever will. She just has a little hitch in her brain when
it comes to names or words she can’t instantly recognize.
I have a hitch in my brain
when it comes to knowing what is truly the right thing to do.
Paid my respects to Danny and
his people. Had a strange talk with
Ronnie about his brother. I don’t know
when I became family fucking counselor for these people, but I know I don’t
like it.
Megs never showed up. That is strange and disturbing. I’m no family counselor and I am even less
bloodhound so it’s not like I’m going to be able to go out and track her down.
Krista was there, and
although I think I said somewhere else in this journal that I was never that
attracted to her (mostly because there was very little there to be attracted
to) she was looking great in black. We
ended up drinking tons of coffee together in the smoking lounge. She’s coming up to DK in the fall and asked
me all sorts of questions about apartments.
Great. I pretended to be excited
about that. Then after staying longer
than we needed to, we left together. She
drove us out to the old Holiday Motors sign on 30 where we used to all go and
drink when we were kids. Baked ourselves
nicely in the evening heat, smoked cigarettes and kept talking. Unlike our last talk at St Joe’s Park, we
talked about mostly nice thing, or somewhat less mean things this time
around…her uncle’s polka band, the play she was doing for Lewis U’s summer
festival, we talked about Danny’s Grandma and how she made the best fucking
cookies in the world. We talked about
her ex and how he was going to fall on his face in law school. Ok, that wasn’t so nice but at least we were
saying mean things about someone I didn’t know or could give a fuck about.
We talked until we were
kissing. We kissed until she decided she
had to drop me off at my folks’ house.
This was pretty late but we’d had a lot of coffee and it was probably a
good idea because exchanging fluids is never that much fun for me when I am
this whacked out on caffeine. I gave her
one last kiss goodnight but before I could get out of her car she asked, “Eddie
do you even have a car?” I said,
“Nope.” She asked, “You’re 21
right?” I said, “Yep.” She said, “If you had a car we’d be at my
place right now.”
I thought…Nope.
