Friday January 26, 1990 What the Hell is Simonides Doing in Syracuse
Mr. S (these U of C guys insist on being called "Mister" instead of "Doctor"...I like that) offered great detail that I am still pouring over in my notes from the other night. We didn't do much more than talk about the setting and who the two speakers were supposed to be.
Simonides, the poet. This is the same Simonides who is quoted (or possibly misquoted) in Plato's Republic. Maybe more on this later.
Simonides was present at the Battle of Marathon. Sometime after the Battle of M he attents the court of Hiero in Syracuse at the invitation of the tyrant (or is it despot?). I wonder if the despot picked up the poet at the depot? Ok, there were no trains back then but Hiero seemed pretty fucking powerful. It seemed like he could not whatever he fucking wanted.
So there is historical evidence that the real Simonides lived and conversed with the real Hiero. But the intro is still creepy to me. The tyrant and the poet find leisure. Then the poet begins to question the tyrant.
More on why this is strange to me later.
