Frisch spent time talking
about Plato’s Seventh Letter. Whether or
not the letter was actually written by Plato is less important than what we
find in this text. The author of that
letter opines that, “through the life of Socrates” one discovers the “heart of
the problem of man in politics.”
Aristotle says “Man is a
political animal” and helps us understand why it is “natural” to find ourselves
in this thing called civil society. But
the life of Socrates elucidates the tension between civil society and wisdom. What are the difficulties of the
philosophical life in the context of the political one?
The philosopher Socrates asks
the question, “What is…?” regarding everything.
The question that follows from that, and the more important one for us
as human beings is “How should I live?”
These are certainly important things.
The city and its
institutions, for the Greeks, are supposed to direct the citizens towards the
good life. The city needs to do this to
allow people to live and work together for the benefit of the city and their
own benefit. If this is the case, Frisch
says there are two questions we must consider:
One – Does the city even need
the philosopher since, once established it educates the citizens on the best
type of life?
Two – Is there a sense in
which the philosopher is dangerous for the city since the philosopher questions
things the city needs to assert for its survival and prosperity?
A whole helluva lot of shit
is happening in this class. This is
going to be a great summer. I need to
stay as sober as possible.
